JD Farrow's: Unique and Rare Historic Football Shirts
JD Farrow's is one of the almost completely unknown sportswear manufacturers that played a key role in the 1980s. Until recently, sponsorships were prohibited in football, and therefore any logo or symbol related to the supplier or sports equipment was banned. It was precisely for the 1981/1982 football season that the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) allowed sponsorships to be liberalized, and all 28 Serie A and B teams took to the field sporting a sponsor on their chest. Many of the historic football shirts of the era are remembered for having sponsors applied in the traditional manner, typically on the chest, but this was not the case for Fiorentina and its sponsor , JD Farrow's, which became both a commercial sponsor and a supplier of sports equipment.
Historic football shirts: the JD Farrow case
The case of the little-known brand appearing on the Viola's uniforms can be considered a preview of what happens every year at the unveiling of the new jerseys. When the Pontello family unveiled the new uniforms, Fiorentina fans were left speechless. Indeed, they replaced the classic jersey, beloved by fans and with which they had won nearly ten consecutive Scudettos, with a shirt featuring the club's new symbol on the chest: a large white disc in the center of which was a stylized lily with an "F" in the center. It was a veritable marketing ploy, with the Pontello family creating a series of products related to the team, also finalizing an agreement with JD Farrow's, whose logo was featured on the lily. Furthermore, red was added to the collar and sleeve trims of the Viola uniform. That summer of '81, there was a genuine revolt among fans and even some members of the board of directors. The JD Farrow brand disappeared from the market except for a brief period in 2015 when the Marina Militare company wanted to revive now-defunct brands. Today, however, the first sponsored kits have become collectible memorabilia, such as the historic JD Farrow football shirts .
