Following the encouraging results obtained last season, Corrado Ferlaino, president in charge of Napoli, put his hand to the wallet becoming the protagonist of the transfer market thanks to the purchase of Giuseppe Savoldi, at the time the best forward in circulation, paid to Bologna a good two billion Lire. The overall operation included a check for 1,400,000,000 lire plus the Clerici card and half of the Rampanti card, together valued at 600,000,000 lire. The 1960/61 season was really subdued for the Napoli Azzurri. The departures of Pesaola and Vinicio above all, although replaced with numerous arrivals, did not favor the championship path of the team coached by Amedeo Amadei. Only 7 wins, 11 draws and 16 defeats. Amedei, from the sixteenth day, was joined on the bench by Renato Cesarini, arriving from Juventus and hired as technical director. With the presidency of the shipowner and former mayor of Naples Achille Lauro, Napoli has always aimed at the noble areas of the Serie A standings.
