This is the year of Chievo Verona's historic promotion to Serie A, won at home with a 2-0 victory over Salernitana with goals in the last twenty minutes by De Cesare and D'Anna.

Also arrives the wonderful victory away from home with Roma in the first half of the season, but after 2/3 of the championship is unable to maintain its place in the top flight and is relegated.

ANECDOTES AND CURIOSITIES:

It was the first season after the Calciopoli scandal and there was a clear downsizing in values. For the first time, referees received earphones to communicate with each other on the field. The top scorer was Francesco Totti, fresh winner of the World Cup and future winner of the Golden Shoe. Unfortunately, the season also saw the tragic death of Inspector Filippo Raciti during the clashes between fans during the Catania-Palermo derby.

It was a disappointing season for Cagliari, which once again risked relegation. The Sardinians were saved by Leonardo Semplice, who took over Eusebio Di Francesco's position on the bench. The turning point came on the 31st day of the match against Parma: 3-1 down, Cagliari went 3-2 down and then, in the last four minutes of injury time, scored the winning goal and the overtaking goal, condemning Parma to Serie B.

As it used to happen, president Maurizio Zamparini changed three coaches in the same season: Pioli, Mangia and Mutti. The Palermo, that had begun playing the preliminary of Europa League, ended up fighting for the salvation. The 33rd day of Serie A was not played due to the tragic death of Piermario Morosini during the Serie B match between Livorno and Pescara.
