On the occasion of the Napoli - Fiorentina match, fifth day of Serie A of the 1989/90 season, Diego Armando Maradona makes his debut in the league. Due to disagreements with the club, struggling with the Argentine's desire to move to Marseille, Maradona enters the field only in the second half with the number 16 shirt. Under 2-0 at the end of the first half, Napoli manages to overturn the game by winning 3-2 thanks also to the decisive contribution of Maradona.

In the 1989/1990 season, in Serie A, Napoli never lost within the walls of the “San Paolo”. On the bench sat Albertino Bigon who replaced Ottavio Bianchi from Brescia. 16 wins and only 1 draw in Naples for a total of 33 home points: this season Napoli wins their second Scudetto. The 1981/82 season for Napoli can be satisfactory within the national borders, with a good fourth place in the league. In Europe and in the Italian Cup, on the other hand, Rino Marchesi's blues did not go very far. Of note is the episode that gave birth to the long twinning between Genoa and Naples.
